Amy Youngs has created a new level of efficiency with "Digestive Table".

"A living ecosystem of worms, sowbugs and bacteria are invited to this table. They are a part of the digestive system that starts with a person discarding food leftovers and shredded paper into the portal at the top. The bacteria and sowbugs begin breaking down the waste and the worms soon join in to further digest it into a rich compost that sprinkles out of the bottom of the fabric bag that hangs beneath the table. This compost is used as a fertilizer for plants, such as those at the base of the table.

The human plays an important part at the table by eating, feeding the food waste to the worms, feeding the resulting fertilizer to the plants, or by simply sitting and appreciating the living ecosystem she/he is a part of. A cross-section of the activity inside the top 9 inches of the compost is made visible using an infrared security camera connected to an LCD screen built into the table. On the screen, viewers can see the live movements of the worms and sowbugs inside."

Smoking Jacket

"The jacket has a built-in pair of lungs on the front. As the wearer smokes, the lungs fill up with the exhaled cigarette smoke and begin to gradually darken over time.

This project was a result of exploring reflective design as it relates to the body, behavioral choices, and information displays."

"Wildlife is an implementation of the speed-controlled mobile projection system I developed.

Using a sensor on the car, the tiger's speed corresponds to the speed of the car. As the car moves, the tiger runs along it speeding up and slowing down with the car; as the car stops, the tiger stops also. A proximity sensor also adds other animated animals when the car is approached."

A water-sharing water gong installation.

"Sustainable is comprised of a network of robot water gongs that are linked together by water tubes that allow each tank to receive water from one upstream neighbor, and to pump water into one downstream neighbor. The network is a closed system that distributes water between the members. We are inspired by the current water resource crisis in the western US states, and have implemented a water resource sharing algorithm that is used to negotiate multiple consumer demands against the available water supply. Imagine that the system is like as a group of farmers or golf courses that have high demands for water usage, but must share and negotiate for the rights to use water." Video here. "mere, a video assemblage, will premiere this Tuesday May 29, 2007 at the Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus Ohio. Based loosely on the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s conception of “the Real” and its related schema, the project consists of five videos that plot a unique relationship between content and form.

The screening will begin at 4pm in the auditorium and has a running time of approx. 40 min. A repeat viewing will take place on the OSU campus Friday June 1st in Hagerty Hall rm 180 at 7pm."

Hilbert Carpets

These images by Sam Sanford were created using algorithms derived from the construction of the Hilbert Curve. The GIFs were initially constructed in Adobe ImageReady and Photoshop. Most of them were then manipulated by scaling them down then scaling them up again. The scaling algorithms in the software interacted in interesting and sometimes unexpected ways with the original patterns.
