The viewer's personal responses (ranging from disgust to desire) meets the artwork in such a way that it can make the viewer more self-aware towards her/his visceral impulses. Tongues are sold for human consumption; the art can be sold for consumption; the tongues in the art cannot, in a sense, be consumed due to their function and content. So they "lie" in functional terms, but technically art with solely functional veracity is classified as commercial design. What do we make of this? The viewer does not experience the actual sense of taste from the artwork (in terms of "tasting" a steak), but it is visually a tasteful pun on artistic taste. <BR/><BR/>As a communicative organ, an intermediary between experience and articulation, what might Mr. Yoo imply in having a tongue rendered mutely active in its dislocated context? The most obvious answer relates to social interactions and how the artwork's exposed mechanisms and unnatural movements reveal the consequences of a lie, whether it be to the self or to others. However, we could also consider the artist's background (Korean resident alien, moved a year or two ago -??-) and acknowledge an experience that dealt with the difficulties and challenges of adjusting to a vastly different language and culture. Imagine trying to get a university degree from scratch in a completely different environment in an unfamiliar language. The highly complex mechanisms encased in awkwardly flopping flesh may speak to the frustrations of a itinerant/migrant/immigrant experience. Interesting choice to understate this personal connection by naming his work "Lie." <BR/><BR/>Because it is stripped of its ability to salivate, taste, or speak outside of its mechanical operations, could the art reveal the limitations and communicative potential of technological dependence? The tongues are visually "speaking" to us through mechanical systems. Given its situation in an academic setting, I wonder if it might be showing possible problems with the mechanization of thought that may result from overly systematized education (more a concern in Korea, though)...<BR/><BR/><BR/>His ideas, methods and imagery can contain innovations that may inspire others to further his work and/or apply them to other fields so that progress can be made towards the problems you are concerned with.<BR/><BR/>For instance, if the animated tongues (a tongue-in-cheek, so to speak, allusion to his animations) inspires someone in the biotech field to look at a problem a different way and it leads to a development in synthetic tissues or food preservation, how is Mr. Yoo not contributing to world hunger?<BR/><BR/>Besides, if you have the answer to consumption (in starvation) with regards to mass consumption, why don't you go implement it rather than wasting your time harassing an artist's work?
