Announcing Blogged, A Web 2.0 blogging experiment that you can interact with live this Thursday May 31, 2007!
Blogged is an interactive installation that pumps a small amount of air into a 6 feet in diameter balloon live everytime someone visits the Blogged project page of billshackelford.com (http://billshackelford.com/home/portfolio_blogged). A visit is registered by clicking on a link that leads them to the page from another site such as a blog. As more and more people visit the project page the balloon expands.
There will be a live video stream of the balloon so everyone can watch what happens. Will the internet pop the balloon? We will find out this Thursday! Keep checking the Blogged project page for more information.

mere - a video assemblage by Jon Keppel
Watch the teaser video.
"mere, a video assemblage, will premiere this Tuesday May 29, 2007 at the Columbus Museum of Art in Columbus Ohio. Based loosely on the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s conception of “the Real” and its related schema, the project consists of five videos that plot a unique relationship between content and form.
The screening will begin at 4pm in the auditorium and has a running time of approx. 40 min. A repeat viewing will take place on the OSU campus Friday June 1st in Hagerty Hall rm 180 at 7pm."

Sustainable - a dynamic robotic sound installation by David Birchfield, David Lorig, Kelly Phillips
A water-sharing water gong installation.
"Sustainable is comprised of a network of robot water gongs that are linked together by water tubes that allow each tank to receive water from one upstream neighbor, and to pump water into one downstream neighbor. The network is a closed system that distributes water between the members. We are inspired by the current water resource crisis in the western US states, and have implemented a water resource sharing algorithm that is used to negotiate multiple consumer demands against the available water supply. Imagine that the system is like as a group of farmers or golf courses that have high demands for water usage, but must share and negotiate for the rights to use water." Video here. ZUSE
A toast printer by Inseq Design.
"ZUSE doesn’t see itself merely as a compact toasting device but more like a print-maker of the traditional kind. Inspired by the early matrix printers, it now engages in burning black & white pictures with 12 by 12 pixel resolution into the toast by diligently marking line by line. With its candid intention of providing happiness to its owner ZUSE can randomly draw from its repertoire of images encoded in its memory chip. ZUSE custom-toasts for a fresh start of the day."

Wildlife Project
Video projections from moving cars by Karolina Sobecka.
Watch the video documentation.

"Wildlife is an implementation of the speed-controlled mobile projection system I developed.
Using a sensor on the car, the tiger's speed corresponds to the speed of the car. As the car moves, the tiger runs along it speeding up and slowing down with the car; as the car stops, the tiger stops also. A proximity sensor also adds other animated animals when the car is approached."

Smoking Jacket
Reactive clothing by Fiona Carswell.
"The jacket has a built-in pair of lungs on the front. As the wearer smokes, the lungs fill up with the exhaled cigarette smoke and begin to gradually darken over time.
This project was a result of exploring reflective design as it relates to the body, behavioral choices, and information displays."

One Eye Ball
A dog's eye view provided by Hung-Chih Pen.
"One Eye Ball is an attempt by Hung-Chih Pen to experience the world from the view of dogs. He mounted LCD displays approximately the size of eyeglasses in a helmet and connected them through a tube with a camera attached to the end of this trunk. The trunk reached to just below the knee of the viewer, just the height, where a dog's eyes would normally be. Inside the helmet, the display shows what the camera records through the "dog eye". You can control the camera by hand or by moving the body and thus view the world from various perspectives.
While learning to deal with this new medium, viewers experience a feeling of dizziness: it is as though they have to newly adapt all the nerves of their body to this situation, in order to experience the sensory perception conveyed by this new medium with its low-control and high-tech feeling.
More of Hung-Chih Peng's work at the Virgil de Voldaire Gallery, New York."

(In)Security Camera
An installation by Silvia Ruzanka.
Watch the video.
"The (In)Security Camera is a robotic surveillance camera with advanced computer-vision software that can track, zoom, and follow subjects walking through its field of view. Deploying sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms in use today by the U.S. military and Homeland Security forces, it can assess threat levels in real time and respond accordingly.
However, the camera is, in fact, a little insecure. Easily startled by sudden movements, it is shy around strangers and tends to avoid direct eye contact. This reversal of the relationship between the surveillance system and its subjects gives the machine an element of human personality and fallibility that is by turns endearing, tragic, and slightly disturbing."

Blackle
Google search with a black background to save energy.
Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen."
